Professor Kurt Schubert’s lecture notes on The History of Austrian Judaism cover the period from the first known medieval sources to post-Second World War. In addition to a comprehensive overview, Professor Schubert places personal emphasis on certain aspects, such as anti-Semitism in the Catholic Church or the Vienna Gesera (the persecution of Jews in Vienna in 1421), for which there are many literature references in the handwritten notes. Despite the vastness of the time span, his analysis of the sources is precise and enables his listeners thorough academic access to the various periods.
The lecture can be divided into ten units with several inserts and source texts. These lectures were held by Professor Schubert from the winter semester 1971-1972 to the year 2007 in a four semester cycle. Professor Schubert was thus the first person to lecture on Austrian Judaism since the National Socialist period in Austria. For many listeners his lectures were the first contact with Jewish history; he thereby set the standard for further work in this field at Austrian universities.
The present body of texts covers the original text of Emperor Friedrich II’s Jewish Edict for Vienna, 1238, as well as Duke Friedrich’s 1244 Jewish Edict for Austria. This material also contains a short text from the Studia Judaica Austriaca, vol. 1: Judaism in 1848, the year of the Revolution. Eisenstadt: Roetzer, 1974, entitled: Der Gefallenen (To the Fallen).

This lecture was given by Professor Kurt Schubert in the summer semester of 1971. The author discusses the history of Judaism in the modern era, beginning with the Enlightenment. The author treats subjects such as court Jews, Messianism, with reference to Jakob Frank or Sabbatai Zvi, and Hasidism. He also concentrates on the anti-Semitism of the age. Political developments such as the Patent of Tolerance are also addressed. The detailed outline also refers to developments in the modern age, in particular to the NS period and the Shoah. Hartwig (Napthali) Wessely’s text Divrei Shalim we-Emet was also used for the lecture, but has not been uploaded here.

Although the typewritten lecture text is about the history of life in the Diaspora, it also looks at the pre-history and early days of Israel. Further units address Judaism during the Hellenistic period and in the Roman Empire, the first early Christian polemics, developments in the Middle Ages, especially during the Crusades, as well as of modern age currents, such as Sabbateanism (a messianic movement around Sabbatai Tsevi in the seventeenth century). Schubert’s discourse ranges from the history of emancipation to growing anti-Semitism until the Shoah and ensuing contemporary events.
The issue of discrimination and social positioning is the main topic of the paper, which spans a large period of Jewish history. The author’s handwritten comments are also of interest.
