Professor Kurt Schubert’s lecture notes on The History of Austrian Judaism cover the period from the first known medieval sources to post-Second World War. In addition to a comprehensive overview, Professor Schubert places personal emphasis on certain aspects, such as anti-Semitism in the Catholic Church or the Vienna Gesera (the persecution of Jews in Vienna in 1421), for which there are many literature references in the handwritten notes. Despite the vastness of the time span, his analysis of the sources is precise and enables his listeners thorough academic access to the various periods. The lecture can be divided into ten units with several inserts and source texts. These lectures were held by Professor Schubert from the winter semester 1971-1972 to the year 2007 in a four semester cycle. Professor Schubert was thus the first person to lecture on Austrian Judaism since the National Socialist period in Austria. For many listeners his lectures were the first contact with Jewish history; he thereby set the standard for further work in this field at Austrian universities. The present body of texts covers the original text of Emperor Friedrich II’s Jewish Edict for Vienna, 1238, as well as Duke Friedrich’s 1244 Jewish Edict for Austria. This material also contains a short text from the Studia Judaica Austriaca, vol. 1: Judaism in 1848, the year of the Revolution. Eisenstadt: Roetzer, 1974, entitled: Der Gefallenen (To the Fallen).

The fragment of the unpublished work Jewish History as the Site of Jewish Identity by Professor Kurt Schubert consists of six completed chapters of the originally planned fourteen, the project having been cut short by his death in 2007. It deals with Jewish identity in Antiquity. Professor Kurt Schubert examines the rise of monotheism in Judaism and discusses various passages of the Tanach in this regard. In the following chapters his observations stretch from the Hellenistic period to the first century after Christ. There are also handwritten notes on each chapter, including those of the unfinished parts of the book.

The material for the book project Jewish History as the Site of Jewish Identity contains notes for all the envisaged chapters. The project could not be completed because of Professor Kurt Schubert’s death in 2007. Beginning with Antiquity, the work would have also dealt with the Middle Ages, (i.e. Maimonides), Jewish art, as well as developments in the history of the modern era and present. The last chapter would have addressed the issue of Jewish identity in the period after the Second World War and the Shoah. Additional, but not uploaded material, includes Ursula Schubert’s article: What is Jewish in Jewish Visual Arts?, Kairos, 27, 1985, p. 269-278, as well as two pages by Kurt Schubert: The Religion of post-Biblical Judaism, Vienna, Herder, 1955, p. 187 ff. and 199. There are also edited letters: David Friedländer to Meier Eger (30 March 1799, Berlin) and Moses Moser to Immanuel Wohlwill (May, 1824). The first completed chapter of the book project can be found here: http://phaidra.univie.ac.at/o:438718

Professor Kurt Schubert completed The History of Austrian Judaism shortly before dying, but the work was not published until 2008, after his death. The book begins with the origins of Austrian Judaism and takes a brief look at Roman Antiquity and then at the developments of medieval Jewish communities from the modern era to the present day. Several chapters are dedicated to the Shoah, as well as to the post-War period. The work is based on his decade long lecture series on the introduction to the history of Austrian Judaism, which can be found on the Phaidra Platform: http://phaidra.univie.ac.at/o:426683 The remarkable list of sources and literature references provide a deep insight into Professor Schubert’s working methods.

Although the typewritten lecture text is about the history of life in the Diaspora, it also looks at the pre-history and early days of Israel. Further units address Judaism during the Hellenistic period and in the Roman Empire, the first early Christian polemics, developments in the Middle Ages, especially during the Crusades, as well as of modern age currents, such as Sabbateanism (a messianic movement around Sabbatai Tsevi in the seventeenth century). Schubert’s discourse ranges from the history of emancipation to growing anti-Semitism until the Shoah and ensuing contemporary events. The issue of discrimination and social positioning is the main topic of the paper, which spans a large period of Jewish history. The author’s handwritten comments are also of interest. The following Reich Law Gazettes (Reichsgesetzblätter) were provided at the lecture: Berlin, 7 April 1933 Nr: 34, Berlin, 16 September 1935 Nr. 100; Berlin, 14 November 1938 Nr. 189; Berlin; 5. September 1941 100; Berlin, November 1941; Berlin, 26, April 1942.

Kurt Schubert’s lecture Christianity and Judaism in Vienna and Austria before the 1848 Revolution until the Occupation on 11 March 1938 outlines the course of Jewish history. From the beginning of the 19th century the Jewish community grew from a small and tolerated entity into a pluralistic and prospering part of society. Professor Schubert pays special attention to anti-Semitic trends by showing texts published during those decades, thus giving the listeners a better grasp of Austrian history between 1848 and 1938. The lecture ends with the rise to power of the National Socialists in Austria and its consequences. Handwritten comments on the bibliography of the text, as well as keywords can be found attached.
